Audubon Parkway Louisville, 40213 January 2001 I was just about to close out the 'log' on the holiday weekend's north-flow hi-jinks yesterday evening (New Year's Day), since it had been quiet most of the day - but then the racket started up again, so I took a few more weather readings to include in this report. Each reading is for on-field wind conditions occurring in conjunction with a northbound departure over local residential areas. This list doesn't cover every such departure, of course - in particular, I was away from the area on Saturday afternoon and evening. But the results show a striking pattern of disregard for established runway use policy, which calls for south flow unless the tailwind along the runway azimuth exceeds - exceeds - seven knots. Not only was this threshold never *crossed* at any point recorded, but until Monday readings remained consistently within the range we normally label as "calm" - less than three knots.
The Monday readings seem to show only that controllers are leaning too far forward in permitting excessive, unmitigated noise over the community when readings are close to the published threshold - unjustifiably, since the threshold already has a generous safety margin built in. The rest of the readings, from Friday night, Saturday and Sunday are simply inexplicable. If information flow, either to the controllers or to the impacted community, is the problem, there's good news. This is the information age. It's past time to apply some. Moser Knob Road Floyd Knobs January 2001 White plane with blue stripe flying low over Floyd Knobs at approximately 12:30 p.m. Alma Lynn Drive Fairdale, 40118 January 2001 Reported a constant roar between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. in Fairdale. Also wanted to know the status of the Part 150 study group. Merwin Avenue Louisville, 40217 January 2001 Awoken at around 5:00 a.m. by louder than normal noise. Also stated his windows were shaking. Milside Drive Louisville, 40223 January 2001 White and black helicopter has been loitering in the area of Westport road and highway 146. S. First Street Louisville, 40272 January 2001 Many flights departed to the north last night. Linwood Avenue Louisville, 40217 January 2001 There is too much aircraft noise, wants aircraft to follow flight path along Preston highway. Greenleaf Road Louisville January 2001 Im calling on behalf of my mother. Your planes are shaking her house to pieces. She just had to spend a considerable amount of money, to her, to make repairs to her attic where your planes have shaken the house so bad its caused extreme settling of the insulation material causing the walls to buckle and have to be torn out, and the insulation removed and new insulation put back in as well as new wall board put back up. These planes shake this house so bad at times that her brass door knocker on her front door knocks on the door of its own accord. Her house has numerous cracks that are developed. Plaster has literally been knocked out of the walls in places. And I would just dare anyone to come over here and stay here for a while as these planes fly over so close to the house that they literally shake it a part. You can even feel some of these planes vibrations in your body. Its like standing next to one of these car stereos with the base cranked up. E. Riverside Drive Jeffersonville, 47130 January 2001 Once again, had numerous UPS planes come over ungodly hours this morning; wake us up. Again, theyre supposed to fly over I-65 where there is already lots of noises; Ive repeatedly said before. Appreciate very much your implementing this as quickly as possible. Thank you again. National Turnpike Fairdale January 2001 Im calling regarding the letter, January the 12th from Lieutenant Colonel Tom Marks regarding the noise abatement studies that they are conducting. It seems to me that the main actions that they have taken up to regarding noise abatement is to move the noise from one area of the city to another. Which is, now they have moved it to the south runway and the last two nights out of many I have been awakened at 5:30 by the UPS flights going over. And they moved it from a city area, the noise from a city area to a rural residential area. So from anywhere from 4:30 to 5:30 to 6:00 in the morning the planes go over. And yesterday afternoon, about, around between 4:30 and 5:00 one of the big UPS planes went over and actually rattled the windows. I could see the airplane out my window. They have come over so low that I could see the landing gear doors. So I just think that is some information that I think should be considered into their planning and hopefully they can take the airplanes from at least from the sleeping hours and put it over the interstate and over the areas where they have already purchased properties because of noise. And thats my comment and thank you very much. Norton Avenue Louisville January 2001 where all the noises seems to be and Joe Corradino said it aint. Id like to know the noise complaint line for the middle of the night, cause Id sure like to call somebody in the middle of the night. Im getting tired of getting woke up over here. Ive said it in the meeting a thousand times, but now I need to know the numbers of who you call for the noise. And Im asking the city to step in as concerned citizens and stop this noise whether youre independent business people or not we need this noise stopped. You people seem to be making money where everybody else aint. Anyway I need to know the next date of the meeting and I need to know the number for the noise line. Preston Highway Louisville, 40217 January 2001 went to bed at 930.pm noise started at 1030.pm could not go back to sleep, my family was also awakened, we can not tolarate much more of this hellish noise, politicians should have to live under the same conditions that we live under then maby they would move the airport out from the city and louisville would be a nice clean and quiet place to livewith out deicing fluid and jet fuel all over homes. Audubon Parkway Louisville, 40213 January 2001 Hm. Just a brief burst of disruption today, but since it came right at bedtime, I thought it'd be worth mentioning. It's clear and dry, and here are the on-field wind conditions reported in conjunction with the non-preferred north departures.
Nothing that quite gets you to the seven-knot threshold Orange Drive Louisville, 40213 January 2001 I do not have a complaint or comment. I live in Edgewood and I am wanting information on the possibility/time frame of my being relocated. What steps can I take to obtain information on this process. Any information you cold supply would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Audubon Parkway Louisville, 40213 January 2001 A stiff north breeze clearly dominated weather conditions on a bright sunny day yesterday morning and early afternoon, justifying north flow. But around 1400 local, the wind just as clearly dropped off, and soon shiftd to the west. North flow continued throughout the afternoon and evening, however, directing the most disruptive operations over the most heavily populated areas without apparent justification. The onset of the nighttime contraflow period was theonly occasion that seeed finally to bring relief. Here are on-field wind conditions reported durig most of these operations, skipping only those that occurred in such rapid sequence that conditons could be presumed identical. Im including al the readings taken, to underscore that in no case- not even one-were conditions reported that would exceed the seven-knot threshold to justify non-preferred north flow.
Trust in the fidelity of the control system is difficult to sustain in the face of counterindications like these. Either more information is needed, or more care to the objectives of existing noise abatement measures. |
