MEDIA ADVISORY

Airport Noise Monitoring Begins with Secrecy

On Wednesday, June 2, 1999 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, the consultant team conducting the Noise Compatibility Study for Louisville International Airport will be installing noise-monitoring equipment in neighborhoods affected by aircraft noise. Noised monitoring will continue at the various locations for the next two weeks.

The devices will gather data on overhead flights to help develop strategies and recommendations to reduce the impact of passenger and cargo aircraft noise at LIA.

The data will come from noise monitoring equipment placed in 20 strategically selected sites in the metropolitan area (10 of which were selected by the public). Times and locations were selected on Tuesday evening by a citizen committee and the consultant team headed by Leigh Fisher Associates (San Francisco). While the Regional Airport Authority of Louisville and Jefferson County knows some locations, it is the desire of members of the Study Group's noise monitoring committee to keep the monitoring times secret from the Authority.

The media are invited to visit those sites beginning Wednesday. Please Note: due to sensitive nature of the testing process and the citizens desire to keep the monitoring times (and sites to some extent) secret from the RAA, the media are requested to exercise discretion in revealing locations or times in their reports.

More information on the Noise Compatibility Study can be found at the project's web site located at http://sdfnoisestudy.com.
